Maryland State Fair Marks End of Summer 2013

Monday, September 2nd marked the end of 132nd Maryland State Fair at the Timonium Fair Grounds.

The fair began on August 23rd with many exciting, games, rides, food, agricultural attractions and musical line ups. On Sunday, August 25th Carly Rea Jepsen performed at the Racetrack Infield with the British boy band The Wanted. The concert was a big buzz- and was the headlining performance of the fair. The performance attracted enough people to have the stage area filled to the brim with eager fans.

Fall Out Boy, another popular band, played at the Racetrack on Thursday, August 29th and attracted about as much attention as pop singer Carly Rea Jepsen. Their performance was followed by Three Day’s Grace on Sunday September 1st, and was the last big-name musical act  of the fair’s musical festivities.

The fair always has something for everyone, and takes pride on its Maryland based culture. There was live bull riding and barrel races, a farmers market, 4-H demonstrations and contests, and yes, even a cow birthing center. One example of, “Maryland culture,” was the agricultural section that showcased the rural area that our state is known for, and how it plays a role in Maryland and its community.

“It’s made me into the person I am today. I know a lot more about animals and agriculture,” said Gabrielle Cory, Miss Maryland Agriculture.

This year’s success can be accounted by the fantastic summer weather that Maryland received. Last year’s dingy and rainy outlook caused numbers to drastically recede. But this year the fair saw over 100,000 people, and the number was expected to increase as the festivities came to a close.

“Looks like we’ll do 400,000 [people], which is right what a nice normal fair is,” said Max Mosner, Maryland State Fair general manager.
