Monday October 24th, Bel Air High School hosted the Rachel’s Challenge program, and was honored to have Larry Scott (Rachel Scott’s uncle) share his niece’s motivating ideals & goals for making a better world. Rachel’s Challenge is a program dedicated to creating a non-violent environment for students by promoting the prevention of teen violence and bullying. Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the Columbine School Shooting on April 20, 1999. Since then her family and friends have traveled to various schools and communities with their message. The presentation signified the importance of compassion and kindness in a school setting. During the assembly many students and faculty were moved to tears, by the passion and emotion radiating from the presentation. After speaking with Mr. Scott following the assembly Mr. Riley stated, “[He’d] never seen students leave an assembly so peaceful and humble.” Many believe that Rachel’s Challenge has already begun to impact the school in such a tremendous way; events of such kindness and respect are occurring that many had thought they would never see.
Mr. Riley had decided to bring Rachel’s Challenge to BAHS due to the many references from the faculty, and Mr.Komondor, who is greatly interested in promoting school-wide kindness and peace. Friends of Rachel will also be coming to BAHS, inspiring the members of BAHS’ community to make a change within the lives of other, with the use of varying projects. Bel Air High School welcomes the positive change that Rachel’s Challenge has brought to our school, and looks forward to the impending impact that it will have on the Bel Air community.
