New year, new movies! With the rest of 2017 ahead of us, here are some movies you might be looking forward to or may want to consider checking out:

 

Beauty and the Beast

Release Date: March 17, 2017

This classic Disney tale is now made into a live action film starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. Disney announced that the live action film will also be released in 3D. Filming of the movie began on May 18, 2015 in Shepperton Studios in London and concluded on August 21, 2015. It was also recently announced that Emma Watson and Dan Stevens sang the track for the song “Something There”.

 

The Space Between Us

Release Date: Feb. 3, 2017

Astronauts travel to colonize Mars, however one of them discovers that she is pregnant and gives birth to her son on Mars. Unfortunately, she dies during childbirth and her son, Gardner Elliot, is raised in the hands of her colleagues. As Gardner grows older, he becomes curious as to who his father is and decides to contact a girl named Tulsa on the internet to find out. Once the astronauts return to Earth with Gardner, he decides to run away with Tulsa to find his father. He soon realizes that his organs are not compatible with the Earth’s atmosphere and his search for his father becomes a race against time.

 

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Release Date: May 26, 2017

Captain Jack Sparrow is back with the fifth installment of The Pirates of the Caribbean film series. This film is centered around the revival of Jack Sparrow’s old rival Capitan Salazar, played by Javier Bardem. Salazar and his crew of pirates escaped from the Devil’s Triangle and are out for every pirate’s blood, especially Jack’s, using the Trident of Poseidon – a relic that controls the seven seas to take their revenge.

 

Spider-man: Homecoming

Release Date: July 7, 2017

After he helped the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-man is mentored by Tony Stark, the infamous Iron Man, to become a high school student during the day and a crime-fighting super-hero during the night. A new threat emerges in Queens, New York known as the Vulture. Peter Parker is determined to rid his city of the villain, however Stark thinks otherwise, telling Peter that he shouldn’t get involved and let the other, more experienced heroes stop the Vulture. However, Peter is determined to catch him and decides to take matters into his own hands.

 

Star Wars: Episode VIII

Release Date: Dec.15, 2017

The sequel to the third highest-grossing film in box office history, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is highly anticipated by Star Wars fans. The second installment does not have an official title yet, but two potential candidates are: Star Wars: Tale of the Jedi Temple or Star Wars: The Order of The Dark Side. Previous characters are expected to return in this film and a new villain who will be played by Benicio Del Toro. Although Carrie Fisher died on Dec. 27, 2016, she finished filming for the sequel before her death. Leaked photos of the movie film sights show that it was filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and Mexico.

 

Ghost in The Shell

Release Date: March 31, 2017

Ghost in The Shell is originally a Japanese manga by Masamune Shirow. Scarlett Johansson will be playing the cyborg field commander The Major who, with her Section 9 task force, catches hackers and other cyber criminals. They suddenly meet a new enemy who’s determined to put Hanka Robotics’ artificial intelligence technology into ruins.

 

Jumanji

Release Date: Dec. 22, 2017

This film is a continuation of the original 1995 film and is a tribute to the late Robin Williams, who starred in the first Jumanji film. This time, four teenagers are brought into the board game, transformed as the characters in the game. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan were casted in the fall of 2016. The film will be released in 2D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D.

 

Smurfs: The Lost Village

Release Date: April 7, 2017

This is the third film of the Smurfs series, set to tell the origin story of how the characters met each other. Smurfette, played by Demi Lovato, finds a creature in the Forbidden Forest who drops a map that leads to the Lost Village. She decides to locate the village along with her companions Brainy (Danny Pudi), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer), and Hefty (Joe Manganiello) before the evil wizard, Gargamel (Rainn Wilson) reaches the hidden destination.
