How to Get Started with Horror Anime

An anime is an animated television show or animated movie created in Japan, known for it’s animation in the Manga art style. A unique and interesting genre of anime is horror, and here are some options to get you started.

Elfen Lied is a psychological horror anime that was produced in 2004 based on the Elfen Lied manga by Lynn Okamoto. The anime focuses on a humanoid race called the diclonius who have multiple invisible arms called vectors, also sporting pink hair, and short horns. In the show, the diclonius are captured and experimented on by the government for their violent nature towards members of the human race. The series consists of one season and has been subtitled and translated into English since its release.

Shiki was created in 2010 based on the manga comic of the same name created by Fuyumi Ono. The one-season series has been subtitled and translated into English. The story of the show focuses on the village of Sotoba in rural Japan where multiple residents have experienced mysterious deaths occurred because of what is thought to be anemia. However during the course of the anime, the residents begin to learn more about the real cause of the deaths and become increasingly paranoid of becoming the next person to die.

Deadman Wonderland was created in 2011 based on the Deadman Wonderland manga books by Jinsei Kataoka. The story is about a young boy named Ganta who had been framed for the murder of his entire class by the mysterious redman. Following the massacre, Ganta is then sent to an odd prison called Deadman Wonderland that acts as both a prison and an amusement attraction to the public. Inside the prison, he must then fight other prisoners using his own blood, and perform deadly acts for the public’s entertainment to receive “candy” to avoid being poisoned. The series consists of one season that has been translated to English and subtitled.

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is a four episode original video animation based on the Corpse Party Video Games from Japan. In the series, a group of friends decide to perform a supernatural ritual to remain friends forever after hearing about it in an old urban legend. However after performing the ritual incorrectly, they become trapped within an elementary school that is haunted by a ghost named Satsko who was murdered in the building. The series have only been subtitled since its release.

Higurashi No Naku Ki also known as When They Cry was created in 2006 and is based on the Higurashi video games from Japan. The anime is about a group of friends consisting of Shion, Mion, Rena, Keiichi, and Satoko who are murdered. In the anime, the story is constantly retold but through the different characters points of view, revealing more about the mysterious background of the town. Since its release, the series has been translated into English and subtitled.
