Solstice Slam Sweeps Bobcats off of their Feet

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, BAHS held their quarterly poetry slam in the Black Box Theatre, including musical performances, jokes, recitations of writing, and slams by Brogan Gerhart, August Napolitano, and Mary Talbard.

This was the second slam this year, following a cover slam in September. Once again the Blackbox was packed with students and parents anticipating incredible performances. Every received a roaring applause and whoop of approval.
The main musical acts were done by fan favorite Canvas, who played “Don’t Look Back In Anger” by Oasis, and The Average who played an original song of theirs which was very well received by the audience.

When asked what he thought of their performance, Andrew Kovaleski, bassit for The Average replied, “I thought we did good, I am happy we have a drummer finally and his xylophone playing rocked. I always enjoy jamming at the slam.”

For the slam portion, Mary Talbard, August Napolitano, and Brogan Gerhart each performed two of their original poems, with Mary coming in first place, August in second, and Brogan in third. Each poem was beautifully written and expertly delivered.

Slammer Brogan Gerhart broke a poetry slam record for largest breach of time limit, a point reduction that in no way tampered with the quality of her slam deliverance. She commented, “It was good to know that my poetry had such an impact on the audience. I said what needed to be said and got the message out. I was also very much honored just to be up there with poets as good as August and Mary.”

The next slam will be Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the Black Box Theatre. These open mic nights are a great opportunity for students to showcase their artistic talents. Come to the poetry slam and support your local writers and musicians!
