George and Napolitano Honored in Grub Street Competition

August Napolitano

Towson University’s literary magazine, Grub Street, published its 2015 edition on Thursday, May 7. Included in this publication of Grub Street were poems by two Bel Air High School students, Carrie George and August Napolitano.

Grub Street hosts a high school writing contest every year. Submissions of prose and poetry from up to 70 participating high schools are extensively judged and narrowed down to a grand winner and their runner-up in each of the two categories. The judges this year decided on Carrie George’s “Salvation in 3 Parts” and August Napolitano’s “Flyleaves” as the first and second place winners, respectively.

“It’s really cool that I can write something and have people find it so good,” says Carrie George.

George and Napolitano were honored at the Grub Street reading event, also held on May 7. They performed their pieces alongside other talented Grub Street writers in front of an audience comprised of Grub Street staff, judges, students, and BAHS Creative Writing teacher Mr. Taylor.

“It has been my pleasure to teach such talented writers,” says Mr. Taylor who encouraged his students to submit to the contest. “I truly believe Bel Air has some of the best writers in Maryland.”

Both George and Napolitano will be receiving a cash prize from Towson.
