Sunset Boulevard Reaches the End of the Road

On April 10, 11, and 12, 2014, the Bel Air Drama Company presented Sunset Boulevard, featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Weber.

For those who could not attend, the plot of the show revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in her decaying mansion on Sunset Boulevard. When Joe Gillis, a young screenwriter, accidently crosses her path, Desmond sees in him an opportunity to make her comeback to the big screen. Romance and tragedy take a toll in this unique musical.

This year’s set was a fan favorite of many. The company constructed the interior of Norma Desmond’s 1920’s-inspired Hollywood glam mansion. The cast worked together every Saturday to bring the mansion alive to create a haunting but glamorous scene that had pictures of Desmond herself (played by Katie Allison) to represent the infatuation Desmond had with herself.

Senior Jash Shah’s favorite set piece was, “the car. It looked like a real 1920’s car! I wanted to drive it myself,” said

The costumes this year grabbed much of the audience’s attention. Rented from Costume World, Mr. Smith worked with this seasons costume crew – Jacob Bengel, Madeleine Ritchey, Sabrina Claridge, and Madison Krchnavy – very closely to make sure the costumes were in perfect condition.

Senior Jacob Bengel explained, “this year’s costumes had to be some of my favorites since I’ve been a part of the company.  My favorite costume out of the entire show would have to be the statement red fur coat Katie (Norma Desmond) wears at the end of the show”.

This year’s production had many good reviews from everyone who went to see it. The cast, crew, and directors should all be proud of the hard work and dedication put in the show!
