NAHS Inductions? Easy as Cake…

The National Art Honor Society had its annual induction ceremony on Mar. 27, 2014. The society inducted nine new members into the club.

Artwork from the inductees was proudly on display during the ceremony. Along with their artwork, each artist made a cake for the ceremony; each cake was auctioned as a fundraiser for the club.

At the ceremony, the students were inducted into the society by “making their mark on the world” and painting a symbol on a canvas with one of the three primary colors: red, yellow, or blue. These colors were used to show each artist’s uniqueness in that these colors make up all of the colors in the spectrum.

Mrs. Ballard, the sponsor of NAHS, gave a speech at the ceremony, saying, “these girls really deserve this. They’ve been working hard all throughout the year and I am glad we can finally honor them tonight.”

Other speakers at the ceremony included Dr. Lamb, one of Bel Air High School’s assistant principals, and Esther Taylor, the president of NAHS. They both talked about the importance of having the arts represented in school just as much as subjects like science and math are, supporting this with quotes from prominent artists such as Leonardo Di Vinci. Dr. Lamb also quoted Albert Einstein saying, “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

The NAHS, who painted Bel Air pink in November, has been asked by the store owners to help decorate the store fronts once again, but this time to celebrate the arrival of spring after this long and harsh winter. Next time you’re on Main Street, be on the lookout for some artwork created by your peers from the NAHS!
