Harford Ballet’s Nutcracker Brings Holiday Joy

The Nutcracker, starring the Harford Ballet Company with guest principal dancers from New York City Ballet, was held on Fri., Dec. 20, 2013.  There were two show times, Friday at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The shows were held at Aberdeen High School.

The Nutcracker was rescheduled to Friday night due to a snow cancellation from the show’s original time on the previous weekend.

The Harford Ballet Company was delighted to have the New York City Ballet accompany them in the show. The professional guests, with roles, were:

Samantha Gullace: Sugarplum Fairy

Craig Hall: Cavalier

Edward Urwin: Cavalier

Beth Grifffin: Snow Queen, Arab dancer

Cedric Bonner: Snow King, Arab dancer

Falkner Discher: Soldier Doll, Lead Spanish dancer

Katie Mackow, a member of the Harford Ballet Company, dancing as a Snowflake, a Marzipan corps and a Waltz of the Flowers corps, said “It was really cool dancing with the New York City ballet because it only happens once a year and they dance so beautifully. It inspires other people to dance like them.”

The Harford Ballet Company was also collecting toys at the Nutcracker on Friday night. During Act 1, children from the audience were brought onto the stage by the dancers for a magic show. If the children brought gifts for Toys for Tots, they were to bring them on stage as they went up for the magic show.

Kelsey Jennings, Bel Air Sophomore and member of the Harford Ballet Company, dancing as a Porcelain Doll, a Snowflake, a Marzipan corps and a Waltz of the Flowers corps, said “I think the show went really well! We have been working on the Nutcracker since August and it finally paid off.”

After all the cancellations the show ended up going as planned and the company did a great job on this year’s Nutcracker. The Harford Ballet Companies next performance will be Cinderella on June 14th and 15th in 2014 at Bel Air high school.
