Bel Air High School junior Kelly Fallace was recently published in the American Library of Poetry. Her poem, Soda Pop, was submitted along with thousands of other student entries in grades 3-12 to be published.
Fallace began taking Creative Writing classes at BAHS her sophomore year. Writing has always been a passion of hers, but this is the first time she has been published. Her teacher read her poem and told her that she should submit it to the contest. All the published entries are separated into four divisions. Fallace is in the fourth division.
A letter was sent out to notify the writers of their selected publication. Though she was shocked at first, Fallace was ecstatic when she found out about her selection. It is a huge honor whenever someone is published in a nationally recognized book. Though this is her first publication, Fallace has great hopes for her future.
“I want to eventually make [poetry] a career,” says Fallace.
Though she enjoys all aspects of creative writing, Fallace feels that there is something special about poetry. She feels that poetry is easier for her to write rather than novels or short stories.
“With short stories, you need so many details, but you can do so much with so little poetry,” said Fallace.
Congratulations on your publication Kelly!
Kelly’s poem, Soda Pop, can be read below:
Soda Pop by Kelly Fallace
Shivering metal creates a mirror of the outside world swimming around
The opening sound – equivalent to that of cracking knuckles
and a rattlesnake’s hiss
Icy air rises out in the form of a little cloud and remains until shooed away
Bubbles float to the top and crackle, the sound of fizz filling the air
And underneath the shiny blue 12 oz can awaits a refreshing sip of Pepsi
