Marching Band Toots Their Own Horns at County Showcase

The Bel Air Bobcat Marching Band showed their stuff on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Harford County Showcase of Bands at Edgewood High School.

The Bobcats traveled to Edgewood to perform their halftime show for spectators and other bands from around the county. The other bands included North Harford, Joppatowne, Fallston, Aberdeen, Edgewood, Patterson Mill, and C. Milton Wright.

In years past, the showcase had been held at John Carroll. All the public school marching bands in the county would travel there to perform their halftime shows. Bel Air participated for a few years but then was not able to due to construction and lack of a field to practice on. This showcase was the first time since the construction was completed that Bel Air participated in a showcase.

The atmosphere was very different going into the showcase compared to a normal half time show. The Bobcats had never performed on Edgewood’s field and they were performing for their friends in other bands and their parents. The people in the audience know what the marching band has gone through throughout the year.

“I think the level of focus and excitement was much greater today not only because we were on a different field, but we were more focused. We wanted to do the best that we could in front of our peers,” said junior Bridget Scanga about the attitude of the band.

With only one home football game left of the season, the showcase marked one of the last times the marching band will perform. In the coming weeks they will begin to shift into the Symphonic band, preparing for their upcoming concert series.

Field commander Cleo Rolocut commented on how she feels the experience as a marching band will benefit the upcoming performances, “It’s definitely going to make things a whole lot easier for us. We’re going to be a whole lot better because of it. We’ve already bonded so much over all this intense time we’ve had together. It’s going to be fun.”

Mr. Domenico spoke of his hopes for the rest of the year, “I hope that what we can transfer from marching band to symphonic band. If we work together we can accomplish anything. If (the band) starts to understand more long term goals, (they) will be much better musicians.”

The next performance will be the Christmas parade on December 1. The first non-marching band performance will be on December 16 for the Winter Concert Series.
