Spring Cleaning

Natalie Peckham

Growing up in Maryland, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles of early spring. The constant indecisive attitude of mother nature, the terrible pollen that seems to make its way onto everything in sight, and the pesky bugs that annoy you every time you step one foot outside all fall under the struggle category.

Coming from the worst victim of seasonal allergies (in my opinion at least), I know the struggle of itchy eyes, constant sneezing, and feeling like you’re about to die every time you go outside because of the pollen. Me being the master, I’ve come up with a few tips to defeating the pollen.

  1. Always carry eye drops, tissues, and nasal spray. Whether it’s in your purse, pencil case, or pockets, you never know when you are going to need them. (Just don’t share them. That’s kind of gross.)
  2. Keep Allergens out. Even if it’s a beautiful day, attempt to keep all doors and windows closed. That way, the chance of pollen coming in is a much slighter chance.
  3. If allergies continue, talk to your doctor about taking an allergy medication. Prescription or over the counter- they help to subdue some effects of pollen.

Now about the weather, it can get pretty hard to predict how it will turn out. When you walk to the bus in the morning it can feel like you’re walking through the tundra, but the minute you walk into school and then outside at the end of the day it’s like you’re about to have a heat stroke. Of course, check the weather on your phone before you leave the house in the morning, but also try to keep a light jacket in your locker or book bag and put that on in the morning and take it off when it gets warmer. Layers are a key to spring time wardrobe.

Now, the best way to really “embrace spring” is to put yourself in the mind set of spring. Outside is getting more colorful because of the plants and trees, and the winter blue have been swept away. Make the most of this time of year with the longer days and shorter nights.

  1. Start with spring cleaning. Take a day to completely clean and organize your room and closet. Not only will it allow for a fresher appearance, but it will make you feel better about going home to a clean room.
  2. Consider a new look. What’s a better excuse to go shopping? Experiment with new clothing styles and break out your old clothes that had been tucked away for winter.
  3. Find a way to relax. Whether it’s sitting outside while reading a book or listening to music, allow some time to do something that makes you happy.

Spring can be the best and worst time of year depending on how you look at it. School’s coming to a close and summer is fast approaching. Why not take some steps to allow for a more enjoyable transition and final month and a half?
