Bel Air Lacrosse Takes On Curley

On Thursday, March 23, the Bel Air Bobcats Men’s Lacrosse Team opened their season with a 13-7 win at home against the Curley Friars.

The Bobcats came out sluggish and slow to begin the game, falling behind 2-1 in the early stages of the first quarter. However, the Bobcats picked up the offensive intensity, led by seniors Finn Gottschalk and Keegan McHugh who orchestrated a 7-0 goal-scoring run to close out the first half. The Cats trotted into the locker room with a comfortable 6-goal cushion.

In the second half, senior Chris Hagy made a few remarkable saves to keep Bel Air on the front foot. Despite Hagy’s heroics in the net, the Bobcats ended up shooting themselves in the foot, awarding the friars a total of 9:30 of extra man opportunities. Shades of last season loomed over the team as a few uncharacteristic turnovers and foolish penalties restricted the Bobcats from achieving their full potential. As the final horn sounded, the Cats trounced the Friars by a score of 13-7.

It was a good first step in our journey. We started off strong, but lost focus and got a few penalties, but grinded it out in the end for a good win,” says senior leader Keegan McHugh.

The race for the county championship will be as tight as the past three seasons. Every school has a chance to reign supreme in Harford County; it will all come down to pure grit and determination for each team.

“It was a great start to the season,” junior defender Nick Jenkens states. “I’m very excited to see what this team can do this season.”

The Bobcats hit the field again this Friday, facing off against MIAA-B conference foe, The Friends School. A tough stretch is coming for the Bel Air as they continue to play some of the top teams in the area. Come out and support them as they look to make it one step further than last season and make the State Championship.
