What to Look for in The World Baseball Classic This Year

Eric Shumway

The World Baseball Classic will begin March 6 this year, and this year’s roster may just be some of the best yet. While it hasn’t caught on fully in the U.S., this will probably be the year that we will pay more attention to this competition.

The first round of the WBC will take place in Miami, Florida. It will feature players from all around the world to compete to become the best baseball team on the planet.

The players for each of the teams is a big reason this is looking to be the best year for the WBC so far. The U.S will be well-represented with Buster Posey, Eric Hosmer, and Andrew McCutchen. These three players combined have a batting average of .292.

The Dominican Republic will have all-stars Robinson Canó, Adrián Beltré, and Manny Machado. These players alone could produce all the runs a team needs, and you can always rely on Adrián Beltré for quality hits and expect him to work the count this year. Their combined BA is .292 as well.

Colombia will have José Quintana and Julio Teheran. These two players are expected to play adequately, not much is really expected from them. They have the talent to work their magic, it’ll just depend on how well they can play together.

Canada will only have one stand-out player: Russell Martin. He will provide great defense behind the plate and a force to be reckoned with beside the plate. His BA is .254.

While it may still be up in the air, it seems likely that the Dominican Republic or United States will have the best chance to take the trophy in the end. Be sure to keep an eye out for the exciting plays in the 2017 World Baseball Classic!
