Last year, the Bel Air Varsity Ice Hockey Team went 12-4 in their inaugural season. Although they are not really a part of the high school, because kids from all over Harford County are allowed to play on this team, they are still called the Bel Air Bobcats.

Some key returners to this young team are junior Evan Bergquist, sophomore Cole Frado, sophomore Daniel Ludwig, junior Blake Lioi, sophomore Brandon Javier, senior Jack Fitzgerald, sophomore Ian Strader, senior Keith Gorschboth, and senior Brandon Mikolaichik.

Some key newcomers are freshman Deckland Dmitry, freshman Nate Bennett, junior Brandon Kays, and senior Ty Mowery, and junior Owen McIntyre.

Junior Evan Bergquist talked about the team’s improvement and goals for this year, saying, “We need to improve on becoming more physical and keeping control of the puck more. Our goal for this year is to win the MSHL Championship.”

The team plans to win the championship by practicing hard and working on the things they struggled with last year.

Coach Jim Karrenbower talked about the outlook of the season, stating, “We have a really good team. If we work hard at practice, and play physical in games, there is no doubt in my mind that we can be a playoff team.”

The Bel Air season has already begun, but they are only a few games in with a 2-1 record. Their next game is in Bowie on Friday, Dec. 2, against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs, the Arundel Wildcats.
