On Saturday, April 11, the Bel Air High School Boys’ Lacrosse team hosted the Scoop Kelly Memorial Tournament. The Bobcats came into the tournament following a close loss against Cape Henlopin, 9-8, and were looking to regain some ground after the loss. On Saturday, the ‘Cats played Walt Whitman High and Quince Orchard, losing the first game 8-6, and winning the second, 12-8.

In the first game of the day, the Bobcats faced off against the Vikings of Walt Whitman, and lost 8-6. The game started out competitively with back and forth scoring from the Bobcats and Vikings. The ‘Cats took the lead before half, going up 4-3. Senior Captain Tom Pfieffer stepped up for the Bobcats, leading the charge with a total of 4 goals. The Vikings came out in the second half a different team, and outscored Bel Air 5-2 to take the victory.

“We came out of halftime a step behind,” said Senior Carter Hoffman. “After that game we knew we needed to play at the level we were capable of if we wanted to take the second game.”

The second game of the day for the Bobcats was against the Quince Orchard Cougars. Bel Air won the game 12-8, finishing the tournament at 1-1.

Bel Air had a compete revival in the second game. The high octane offense and lockdown defense did not stop, and the Cougars had no answers. At the end of the first half Bel Air led, 6-1. In the second half Quince Orchard turned the game around. They started challenging Bel Air Senior Anthony Sampayo on the face-offs and put together a couple of good offensive sets to get back in the game. Bel Air was having none of the comeback though, closing the game out and taking home the victory, 12-8.

“I don’t think we we’re expecting them to come out so intense in the second half,” said Senior Garrett Utz, who led the game in scoring with 5 goals. “We started playing sloppy and our offense got out of rhythm. We focused back up, and closed out the game and that’s what is important.

Bel Air’s next game will be Tuesday, April 14 against county rival North Harford. The game will be played at North Harford at 6:45, with JV starting at 5:15.
