Field Hockey Ends the Season at 11-5

On Wednesday, Nov. 5, the Bel Air Field Hockey team traveled to Broadneck High School to take on the Westminster Owls in the MPSSAA state semi-finals, only to fall 2-1 in a tight match.

The first half was as expected for a state semi-final game. Each team came out firing, hoping to gain an early lead and put the opposition away early, but the defense for both teams held strong. Senior defender Katy Higinbothom stood out in the first half making a defensive safe, and keeping the score at a deadlock.

“It was an intense game,” Higinbothom said, “they were a good team and it was very back and forth the whole game.”

The Bobcats earned 5 corners in the first half, but could not capitalize. No one team gained momentum in the first half and the Bobcats went on the offensive in the first part of the half, but Westminster came right back again stuffing the Bobcats advance and creating chances of their own. The score was knotted at 0-0 at half time.

The second half held much of the same, but the Owls were finally able to score off of one of their many corners. Westminster took the lead with 20 minutes to go. This, however, only fired the Bobcats up, with 11 minutes left in the game Anna Farley scored to tie up the game off of Bel Air’s 10th corner of the game. Westminster would not be outdone however, scoring 4 minutes later to once again take the lead, this time for good, denying the Bobcats a trip to the State finals.

The Bel Air Field Hockey team finished the season with an 11-5 record and giving Bel Air its first regional championship in 20 years. The Bobcats will lose 13 seniors this year.
