Wrapping Up Your Holiday Shopping With Courtesy

Mary Talbard

With Christmas just around the corner, people are searching high and low to find the perfect presents for their loved ones. For them, it’s all about purchasing specific items at a reasonable date to have them in time to put a big smile on someone’s face. However, a lot of people disregard one of the most important factors that contribute to making this busy holiday season successful: retail employees. Here are a few tips, from a sales associate to you, to make this gift-giving holiday easy for both the store and the customer.

Try to be as courteous to customers and sales associates as possible. We have many things to do, such as folding the store down, putting away shipment, ringing up customers, etc. Our lives are made easier when customers treat us politely and respectfully. Consider other customers as well. It’s the little things that count. For example, saying excuse me or kindly getting out of someone’s way when they need to get by. Friendliness will not only gain you respect from your fellow shoppers, but you are more likely to get a warm, appreciative smile from the employees at the store as well. After all, isn’t that what Christmas is about?

Although it may seem difficult, try to have an idea of what you want before going into the store. In other words, don’t depend on the associates to pick out the perfect present for your friend or family member. You don’t have to know exactly what you want to get them; finding unexpectedly great gifts is one of the highlights of the holidays. However, it may be helpful to keep a small mental list of the things that your friend or family member likes. Sales associates can then direct you to the correct area in which those things are located. From there, you can decide what would be best for the person you are buying for.

That being said, don’t be afraid to ask questions. We’re here to help you. If you need something, just simply ask a sales associate. Try to find people that are on the floor, rather than behind the register. During the holiday season, stores try to keep a good amount of employees in the store at all times for all of your shopping needs.

Try to keep the store as neat as possible. If you drop something, take a few seconds to put it back. The same goes with shirts and other folded clothes. You may not know the exact way a store folds their clothing, but just try your best to make it neat to avoid the merchandise getting wrinkly or dirty. In the end, employees appreciate someone who makes an effort.

Personally, I think the most important thing to remember this season is to be patient. A few people can only do so much. Although they would love to drop everything and help you, they have to stay fair and help the people that asked before you. A lot of times, store computer systems get bogged down when doing consecutive orders too quickly. Don’t blame the associate for these issues. They’re doing the best that they can with what they’re given.

Overall, just keep a smile on your face this season. Enjoy yourself and the people around you. Grab some hot chocolate, make a list of things you need to purchase, and remember these important tips to make your holiday shopping painless and enjoyable. Thank you, and Merry Christmas!
