On Sunday, April 19, 2015, the Bobcat Engineering team won 1st place in the Maryland Engineering Challenge Cargoship Competition, making this their third win in a row.

The Maryland Engineering Challenge is held at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, and entry is open to every high school in the state of Maryland, with the average of 8 teams competing.

In this competition, there are 5 components in which one can earn points. These components are a written report, oral report, design and fabrication of ship, reliability of team, and a demonstration of the ship’s performance. The team with the most points wins the competition.

The Bobcat Engineering team consists of 11 students and 1 teacher, and they all work a minimum of 3 hours a week after school on their cargoship. These ships aren’t cheap. Even when using recycled parts, it usually costs $100 – $400 to make a ship.

“Bel Air’s team worked hard from August to April, putting in many hours each week in order to be ready by the competition date,” said Mr. Serokos, FoT teacher at Bel Air High School and sponsor of the Bel Air High School Engineering Team.

The Bobcat Engineering team worked hard this year to bring home a win for Bel Air. If you happen to see a member of our engineering team, be sure to congratulate them on their victory.
