Are You Ready to Recycle?

From Oct. 20 to Nov. 10, Bel Air will be participating in the 4th annual nationwide Recycle Bowl.

The Recycle Bowl is national competition to see how much recyclable material a school can produce in one month.  The winner is determined by how many pounds of material a school produces vs. population of the school. This will be Bel Air High School’s fourth year in the competition. Bel Air has been participating in this competition since it began in 2010.

Mrs. Snell, the recycling coordinator at Bel Air, said, “Bel Air has never won state. In the past years we have come in 3rd, 2nd and 4th.”

Bel Air will be in the competition with nine other schools from Maryland and over 1,000 schools from around the country.

Mrs. Snell said, “It is a nationwide competition for those who wish to participate. The recycling coordinator at each school needs to sign their school up for the event. They are not automatically entered.”

Acceptable materials include plastic, glass, and paper. Many things that are recycled daily are aluminum cans, cartons, glass/plastic bottles, books, cardboard, magazines, newspapers, and office paper.

“The only rules are that the materials must be recyclable,” Mrs. Snell said. “They must be weighed and reported back to the corporation running the competition.”

The grand prize for the national winner is $5,000, so make sure you are recycling all of those materials and not just throwing them away.
