In February, Harford County lost John ‘Scoop’ Kelly, a beloved Social Studies teacher and Head Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse Coach at BAHS. His death left the community feeling empty, shocked, and deeply saddened, but his memory lives on. On Oct. 26, the Kelly family will be holding a Memorial 5k run/walk at Harford Community College to help raise scholarship money for The Scoop Kelly Scholarship Fund.

Starting as an assistant coach at Bel Air in the late 1990s and becoming a head coach in 2005, Kelly spent about 15 years coaching both youth and high school lacrosse, including being an owner, director, and creator of Tribe Lacrosse with former BAHS Head Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse Coach Colin Carr. Kelly was known for intense style of coaching and his ability to drive both his students and coaches to be the best they could be.

The race has five different age categories: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50+. Awards will go to the top three overall males and females, as well as the top male and female in each age group. T-Shirts are guaranteed to all 5k participants that are registered by Oct. 17. Refreshments and random prize giveaways from sponsors will also be available after the race.

Dave Eddinger, assistant coach under Mr. Kelly, stated, “He always made sure that we played the best that we could play, because you never know when you’re not going to play again.”

The money raised at the event will help keep the race going in the future. One male athlete will receive a scholarship based on their academic and athletic accomplishments thanks to the money raised in Scoop’s memory.

There is a twenty-five dollar entry fee for the race until Oct. 25, if you register on the day of the race, the entry fee is thirty dollars.

The course starts out at access road to Harford Community College next to WaWa, and travels through the college grounds on paved surfaces before returning to the parking lot next to WaWa at the finish line. Course marshals will direct racers at all turns and water will be available on the course.

Come out to the event to support The Scoop Kelly Scholarship Fund!
