Hurricane Irene Rips Through Bel Air

On Saturday afternoon the rain started in Bel Air. This was the first sign of hurricane Irene, which would eventually cause millions of dollars of damage to the local area. On Saturday night into Sunday morning the storm hit and the winds got up to about 50 miles per hour in the Bel Air area.

The damage was mainly power-outages, as many trees in and around Bel Air were knocked over onto power lines. Due to the power outages the first day of school for the Harford County Public School System was postponed from Monday, August 29, 2011 to Wednesday, August 31, 2011. One of the main reasons school was delayed was many of the traffic lights along Main Street, highway 24, and  highway 924 were not working and this caused confused drivers and made the road a little more dangerous to drive on.

Electrical power is such an important part of our lives, we light our homes, refrigerate our food, and we run our TVs, internet, and computers with it. However, until power is restored many people will have to rely on community services and friends to manage.                                                                                                                                                    Bel Air High and a few other schools opened on the 31st, but a few schools still weren’t open. According to the Harford County Public Schools Website all schools were opened as of September 1st, 2011.
