Swing Dance Success

On Saturday, May 14, the Bel Air Jazz Band hosted its fifth annual Swing Dance in the school’s cafeteria.

The Dance acts as one of the program’s biggest fundraisers, raising money for the band’s various activities throughout the year. The idea was conceived by former music teacher, Mr. Dominico, as one final project to bring people together in an interactive school event that could benefit in both the short and long term.

The Dance consisted of several students coming together to dance to the band’s live music that they had been practicing all year. It has grown in size over the years, with this year’s silent auction being twice as large, and twice as many professional dancers getting involved to teach everyone how to properly do the moves to the music that would be played later that evening.

The atmosphere was upbeat and electric, everyone dancing hard until soaked with sweat, while taking part in the silent auction as well, which had prizes such as gift cards, vacations, sports gear, etc.

The band itself played excellently, sounding professional and confident as they powered through their music.

“We’ve been hyped about this event for the entire year,” said senior drummer, Andrew McDonnell, “and we feel like we are going to go up there and kick some serious butt tonight.”

If you were unable to make it to the dance, make sure you go next year. It is a fun and entertaining time that offers a unique opportunity to interact with fellow dancers and the band itself. Also, make sure to spread the word to friends and family about it, as it is not exclusively for Bel Air High students. It will most likely take place in May on a Saturday.
