American Idol – After 15 seasons, the Fox singing competition that brought us stars such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, and many more aired its final episode this week. Original host Ryan Seacrest returned for the season, and the panel of judges included Harry Connick Jr., Keith Urban, and Jennifer Lopez. After the devoted viewers voted, the final winner of American Idol was determined to be Trent Harmon, a Mississippi singer-songwriter who celebrated his win with a performance of his own original song, “Falling.”

Pope Francis – With the publication of a 256-page document entitled “Amoris Laetita,” or “The Joy of Love,” the Pope gave his honest opinion on the virtues of family life. More specifically, his writing was a plea for the Roman Catholic Church to be more accepting of families of different backgrounds. Specifically, Pope Francis wishes to see more acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, divorced Catholics who wish to be remarried, unmarried couples, and more. Among other things, he argues to the church that a clear, welcoming path to receive holy communion for these people should be made. This adds to Pope Francis’ public image of a rather progressive, modern Pope.
