Three BAHS Students Named Some of the Best Writers in Maryland

August Napolitano

The State of Maryland International Reading Association Council (SOMIRAC) recently announced the winners for their high school writing contest. For the first time, the work of three Bel Air High School students won on both county and statewide levels.

Bel Air students Mary Talbard, Sloane Schwalenberg, and Kaylee Stampone have all been selected by the SOMIRAC as three of the greatest young writers in the entire state of Maryland.

All three of the winners are creative writing students of Mr. Taylor, who frequently informs his students of new contests for a chance to be rewarded for their immense creativity. For the SOMIRAC contest, his students submitted an original poem and/or short story that they felt showcased their talents and skills learned in class.

“Winning states has given me the confidence I needed to go into the writing field,” says Mary Talbard. “I honestly don’t think I could’ve done it without Mr. Taylor.”

An awards ceremony will be held for all of the SOMIRAC winners at the Hunt Valley Inn on April 15 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
