On Wednesday, Oct. 8, the Tri-M Honor Society held inductions in the Bel Air High School auditorium.

The Tri-M Honor Society is the international music honor society for middle and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishment and service activities, and inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.

“I think the Tri-M Honor Society is really neat because it’s like a national honor society except it has the music component hooked to it. I think it’s great that those students are getting as involved with the school and government system as the other honor groups are,” said Mr. Domenico, music teacher and Tri-M advisor at Bel Air High School.

This year students had to audition in order to be inducted into Tri-M. Tri-M is based both on grade point average and musical ability. All the students had to apply by submitting their grade point average and listing their community activities.  After their application was accepted they had to audition, Monday, Sept. 29, by playing a piece of music of a certain difficulty level or using their voice. If they fulfilled all the requirements they are invited to join the honor society.

The official Tri-M website states, “Through more than 5,500 chartered chapters, Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools throughout the world. Tri-M is a program of the National Association for Music Education.”

Tri-M officers include Carolyn Todd, Sydney Schoff, Amanda Tran and Caroline Huang.

At the induction the audience and members all had the opportunity to sit on the stage. Tri-M officer Sydney Schoff said, “Having inductions in the auditorium was cool because we have the parents on stage with their kids.”

Tri-M members will continue to help out in the community and foster an awareness of the program. Some things they do include ushering concerts here at Bel Air as well as going to assisted living homes.
